Lotr vs got world and history
#1
I think these 2 franchises have the best build fantasy world but which do you think is the best one?

I prefer lotr because it feels bigger and more flushed out. However, I've only seen the GoT TV series and not read the books, so I'm a bit biased.

Lord of the Rings has by far the most fleshed out world. The geography is very well-thought-out as are the histories of all the peoples and their migration patterns. Each culture is also well-defined and interconnected.

Much of what George RR Martin was able to envision for a fantasy realm was enabled by Tolkien already having done much of the creative work. GOT makes a lot of fantastical leaps by taking things for granted like the massive city of Qarth or Braavos. Those borrow heavily from Morocco, Egypt, Venice, Ancient Rome, yet the world of Game of Thrones is not presented anywhere near as large and diverse as our actual world.

It's a class case of building off assumptions from established concepts in Lord of the Rings and not doing the heavy work.

Definitely LotR. As lightspeedwin pointed out, without Tolkien there really wouldn't "fantasy" as a genre. I don't think the world building in GoT is too impressive, the only aspect where it outshines LotR is with complex political narratives.

Lotr definitely had the larger universe and thoughtful set up and progressions. What did you think? Would be great to see them
Both blended together.

It's a good point that the politics of GOT is more interesting.

Which raises the point that the stories of both LOTR and GOT are vastly different. GOT is far more interested in politics and double-dealings and a pessimistic pseudo-reality. LOTR is much more fantastical and mythological.

GOT sort of came close with the forest people and the origin of the white walkers but in the end I thought they completely wasted that storyline and mythology. A huge buildup over season after season for a completely illogical conclusion.

GoT tries to compete but JRR Tokien's LOTR has more substance, they have not even scratched the surface, yet.

got for sure it is done over 8 seasons

Game of Thrones' 8 seasons do not tell a satisfying story. Also, much of it is endless character development which is not specific to the world of Game of Thrones, it's just basic storytelling. And Game of Thrones isn't even consistent with its characters. When you really look at the actual WORLD of Game Of Thrones and its world building, it is actually quite dull.

Lord of the Rings has a lot more details and balance of different experiences.

There are very few stories that can beat lotr. It is a bible of fantasy stories.
