As the title states this is going to be a thread discussing the popularity of Fall Guys. It’s a curious situation that the gaming industry often finds itself in. The situation in which these extremely casual games soar high and the above the popularity of games which one would expect. But why is that?
That is what is to be discussed below but I’d also like to throw my own hat into the ring and try to peg down why. As someone who has played FG for a decent amount of time now (nothing crazy but if my friends are on it I’ll usually join in) I can kinda see the appeal. The game is fairly simplistic both from a gameplay and visual standpoint. You play as humanoid bean creatures which compete against each other in a process of elimination gauntlet until there is one standing. It’s Wipeout or Takashi’s Castle. The thing is though is that that’s all the game is. It has nothing else. So what keeps people coming back for hours and hours at a time? Well there are a few factors which stand in favor of the game.
Firstly is the fact that it’s largely casual and the casual gaming community is far larger than any other sect. Secondly is the drought of games in which FG launched. Larger scale releases such as The Last of Us Pt.2 and ghost of tsushima released a pretty good while and other major games such as cyberpunk 2077 and Square Enix’s Avengers game don’t release until the usual videogame primetime of october-November (aka the black friday and holiday Season.) Thirdly is the niche for this kind of game being relatively untapped as far as games go. Nothing quite like Fall Guys has been released in quite a long time, if ever if my memory serves me.
These are just my thoughts, if you guys have any more to add to the pile feel free to comment!
