Understanding the Hype behind death note
#1
I recently watch deathnote having a bunch of time during lockdown since it's extremely popular and I just did not get it. Maybe it was intended for a younger audience or I missed something out in the manga.

Culture has changed for sure, when it first came out, it was just mindblowing beacuse nothing of the sort had ever come out.. but now, mass media and netflix kinda ruined it.

I think for a lot of people, it became the series you use to get your friends to try watching anime because it's super grounded and realistic compared to a lot of shows. It became the big classic series that everyone's seen, kind of like how Harry Potter is seen as kind of a classic fantasy series even though it's not really all that great. They're popular for being popular.

Death Note also really benefits by having a great hook at the start. Generally anyone who watches the first two episodes will see L tricking Light with that first tv broadcast, and be so blown away that they're hooked for the whole series. People tend to remember how smart the first 6 or 7 episodes are, and forget that the quality drops off pretty steadily after that.

I thought it was enjoyable until near the middle but after a certain event it went downhill for me, the ending was satisying at least

#5
I'd say that the story line is just done in a very good way. Nowadays you just don't get that much of good stuff anymore and its only about how much blood is flooding or who kills the most but the love to a detailed and whole story is just what gives deathnote the touch.

#6
i have a hard time with anime in general. i wish the animation was more unique.

#7
For me, the anime was garbage. The animation was all rigid and the voice acting was subpar. The manga however, is far better. The atmosphere is tenser, you could follow the story at your own pace, and the art is so much better. I always recommend to read it rather than watch it

It was honestly hard to stay hooked after the Naomi episode. Overall still great up to a certain episode but after that it felt like it overstayed it's welcome.
