The price goes up and down from time to time but if I wanted to invest I would consider other options. I don't see the point of buying bitcoin to purchase stuff with since cash is less volatile. Why would I purchase bitcoins right now?

Agreed, it is still too volatile and not widely enough accepted. Most people who invest big in cryptocurrency believe fiat will eventually collapse, so it is an investment in the future for them.
