[ASK] what is the best method to learn a new language?
#1
Hey guys, as you can see on the title, I want to learn a new language, which is Chinese and Japanese
Do you have any method to make the learning process effective?
Or, do you have any learning websites/applications, books, etc that you can recommend to me?
Thanks in advance

Have you tried to use duolingo?  it has not only teaching but you can brush up on what you learned in the past as well

Learning vocab sheets and saying it goes a long way

there are a lot of apps that can help you

#5
There's some pretty solid apps like babel and Duolingo that can help, IMO, it's a good idea to get more immersed into the language audibly, once you have some basics down, try listening to some downloaded audiobooks in the language you're trying to learn, it'll help your brain connect some of the dots Smile

#6
I’m going to echo what everyone else is saying and go with Duolingo. But nothing matches actually conversing with someone else

#7
I think those language apps like duolingo and videos where the person teaching you is fluent in the language your currently speak and the language you're trying to learn just to have a better understanding

#8
duolingo is 100% recommended to help you start, but agreeing with the other replies, nothing will beat a native/fluent speaker of the language. learn by doing, find some way to speak/read/write the language more than just 5 minutes a day on the app. I can guarantee it will help you learn and retain what you learn far better!

watching shows and videos

The thing that is the best is for you to go to the actual places and get immersed especially with those languages as they're entirely different than English. You can always just do like workbooks and the sort but it would be better to actually go to those places.

complete immersion is the way to go

#12
The above two posters are right, complete immersion is how to do it. Can be difficult to schedule.

Also agreeing with ghjghjgjhg, that TV shows and films help. They can entertain enough to keep your attention, which is how people often learn english almost accidentally. May want to try Sesame Street in another language, since they talk slow and clear to help people learn it natively.

This is something my friend did in order to learn spanish quickly (for class). He started watching a lot of spanish videos, read a lot in spanish, and even changed his phone settings to spanish. Watching and reading in spanish vastly improves your language ability and changing your phone languange forces you to know what certain stuff means, since most use their phones on a regular basis.

The duolingo owl is threatening enough to make you want to learn

#15
Some language apps are good and practicing with some people who know the language

#16
Maybe you can find a fun TV-show to watch in the language you're learning. It's easier to learn if you have a bit of fun too!

#17
Heard Duolingo is good

#18
Try audiobooks.
They have a lot of them for learning the basics of any language you want.

watching anime pretty much gives you an idea on how to pronounce japanese. its not the best for actually learning how to read since subs tend to just translate so it can make sense on context
