I've been playing it, common consensus around the AoE community is 3 wasn't that good. Most play went back to 2 when the HD version came out, 4 feels like 2 but with updated engine and graphics. Game is smooth and feels polished, just waiting for mod support and custom maps/modes, which is in the works.

Its no starcraft but it is a slower paced rts.
