Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board have handed in their resignation following a meeting held on Tuesday evening.
Bartomeu came to the decision ahead of the vote of no confidence against him which was set to be held at the beginning of November.
Despite presenting a tough stance on Monday, when he said that resigning had not crossed his mind, Bartomeu will leave his post after six years in charge.
Leo Messi's burofax, poor results on the field, growing discontent among the fans and the club's economic situation left Bartomeu on the wire, but it was the vote of no confidence, with more than 16,000 signatures, that finally pushed him over the edge.
The fact of that the Catalan government and the PROCICAT announced on Tuesday that the vote could take place, despite the coronavirus measures in place in the city, led to a change of heart from Bartomeu.
Bartomeu, who was a director under Joan Laporta, acceded to the presidency in January 2014, after the resignation of Sandro Rosell due to the legal situation of the club. He was acting president until July 2015, and was then voted in as president by club members.
