Search on Amazon for "Plugable USB C to M.2 NVMe Tool-Free Driverless Enclosure" and pair that with a Samsung NVMe. It's cheaper than buying a consumer SSD, and as fast as internal disk if you connect it to a thunderbolt port. You can also swap different NVMe cards into the same enclosure so you don't need to buy multiple enclosures.

I use a oyen digital ssd. It has been working great and was very affordable for the storage space.
