Do you think the latest steam release will affect the player counts of it? I didn't really follow it after initial release, but they now have crossplay enabled so its possible this could boost the game up a lot. I am enjoying it so far, seems like a classic borderlands game, with modern mechanics.

Dude totally.  I know so many people, including me, that didn't buy the game on the epic store and decided to wait the 6 months for the steam release.  As for the crossplay I have no idea and to be honest I had no idea that bl3 had it but the steam release is huge for expanding the player base.
