Quote:Bailey Anne Hector Final exam
EDHE 105 Sec 117

For some reason, it is a common assumption that the inhabitants of a conservative state are ALL Republicans, or relatively right leaning moderates and that those who populate the blue states are all liberals or something similar. But this a stereotype, and despite what the polls say and people think there are liberals in places like Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama. And while I have yet to meet another out and out democrat like myself at the UNiversity of Mississippi I am comforted by the statistics that tell me there has to be someone else on the campus who thinks like me. So, for my final project paper I decided to write about living in a place where being a liberal, a feminist, pro-choice, or agnostic make me a minority; but since I classify myself as all of the above I am of rare breed here among the Ole Miss student population. A lot of times, I'm bashed for being a liberal. I've had people tell me I'm stupid. I've been told I'm going to burn in Hell. I've been told that voting for a certain candidate would make me unwelcome in someone's household. None of that really bothers me though. I’m not easily offended. I’m secure in my views and I know that no one can force me to think a certain way. It doesn’t hurt me when I’m insulted for the way I think. For me, being a liberal in a red state is often very frustrating. Sometimes I ask myself, “Does thinking I’m the last sane person on the planet actually make me insane?” Not because I’m the only liberal I’ve met, but you just feel so overwhelmed by conservative rhetoric that you can easily feel isolated from reality. I have experienced that most students who share some Democratic or Liberal beliefs refuse to speak out, for fear of being stigmatized by overbearing conservatives. This year’s presidential

election brought forth projectile word-vomit of reasons Liberals were ruining America, and one time while working on a group project for a class some of my teammates started talking about their beliefs. What I gathered was that they think that gays are trying to recruit young people to join their sinful and hedonistic lifestyle, and that homosexual marriage was the reason America was going downhill fast. I decided to speak up and tell them that they had been misinformed, and I immediately regretted it. I asked them, “Do you know any gay people?” and they said yes, so I asked if they had...
