I have never played a JRPG , and have been wanting to get into them for quite some time but honestly I have no clue where to start, are there any must-plays or obvious best picks?

I recommend you Chained Echoes. It's a relatively new game that has the essence of old JRPGs while having updated mechanics which make it funniest than other older JRPG. If I were you I would give it a try!
