If you go to a foreign country which has more then one language, how do visitors know what's used where?

Take Belgium for instance from what I understand these are 3 languages used throughout the country, what's the protocol?

Also how do national sports teams decide what to communicate in, Switzerland for instance has for official languages

Just go for english. Northern european countries are almost completely bilingual at this point
