Do monster movies, especially crossover giant monster movies, really need an intricate story? I see the cast with actors from the previous godzilla movie and I don't think movies like these need a full or even good story as long as the monsters get screen time and look good, after all they are what people want to see in a monster movie not some melodrama.

They do, because you want viewer to feel immersed in the world and events that are shown, so that impact of the monsters like that truly hits you. If you are not immersed because story made no sense, you lose that sense of watching something that could be real.
