Has there always been this many harem anime? In especially isekai anime, the MC is purposely made bland looking. Is this so the viewers can live vicariously through them and imagine themselves with all the anime girls.

My first ever harem show was Love Hina. I also briefly saw clips of Tenchi on Toonami early on.

It was weird that Tenchi aired on cartoon network back in the day, even censored.

The first clip I ever saw of tenchic was 2 girls bathing under hotsprings waterfall in binkinis that were digitally added in for censorship. Would never fly today.

You should start with the god of all harem Animes, Highschool DxD, has 4 seasons. Storyline is interesting but don't expect anything groundbreaking.
2nd To love Ru, guilty pleasure

3rd Sekirei, good story, but on Anime it's incomplete.
