Any suggestions on IDE? Intellij seems to be expensice and VSCode needs a ton of extensions to cater to a user needs. Any suggestions on any other IDEs?

It depends on what language you intend on using and the kinds of programs you would like to make

VSCode is definitely good, but if you want something more lightweight, you could use something like Sublime Text but you would need some extensions to compile code.
