Looking at a rangefinder today, I saw how expensive it was, and remembered that 2 of the 3 guys I always golf with have a rangefinder.  They don’t mind me using it as we’ve been friends since before college.  Mooching off of them is nice, but one of my friends has another friend that’s an avid golfer, and gives him his old (but very good) clubs for beyond cheap.  If you’re starting out golfing, find a friend that loves it.  Your hobby becomes cheaper.

I have no idea what that is but I do think that something essential for a hobby is lame when it is too expensive.

Assuming you have a smart phone in today's world; there are many apps that have courses loaded and use GPS to determine distances. I know a friend of mine used one last time we were out and he sure didn't pay for it.

Range finders can be had for just over 100$ as well. Check out hunting/shooting stores. You'll find expensive and less expensive options.
