Growing up, it felt like gamers would pass on knowledge about old classic games while also playing new ones, but they really stuck to the originals. I'd say around the time of the big AAA games becoming more "cinematic" around 2010, there seemed to be a shift, along with movie streaming content, to just having a ton of new games, early-access, no more console exclusives. Call of Duty kind of started this process of killing everything. they release a new game every year, same engine, same levels, same guns, same thing.
