Is there a discernible shift between gamers valuing "old" games vs. "new" games?

Growing up, it felt like gamers would pass on knowledge about old classic games while also playing new ones, but they really stuck to the originals. I'd say around the time of the big AAA games becoming more "cinematic" around 2010, there seemed to be a shift, along with movie streaming content, to just having a ton of new games, early-access, no more console exclusives. Call of Duty kind of started this process of killing everything. they release a new game every year, same engine, same levels, same guns, same thing.

I don't really see young gamers caring much about older games anymore.

That's because younger gamers don't ever hear of the older games. They've grown up being completely surrounded by media of all kinds, so they naturally follow the shiny new media that's put out every 15 seconds it seems. With all their attention focused there, it's hard for them to be able to to ever explore the older games that are out there, unless someone takes them by the hand, and leads them.

I guess it's similar with music. It depends on what you hear on your playlist or radio for example.
Games need lots of exposure to increase awareness.

I never really played much games in my childhood, so when i started playing games i started playing old games from ~2010-2013 (so the time that 3d really got attractive) I enjoy the games from that time period because they have a good story. I do enjoy the newer games too because they are much more satisfying to play mechanic and graphic-wise.

music is a good analogy, often people stick with whatever they ended up listening the most when they were young

Those wouldn't be considered old games and that's kind of my point that people are spoiled on graphics now and missing out on games that were far more creative and varied.

The games you're talking about too are also part of the wave of games that were made to be "cinematic" so they started having more cinematic cutscenes and stories. But not necessarily better gameplay.
