Job interview
#1
Hey guys I'm 23 and heading into my first big time job interview. Only work I've done before was part time stuff like at a fast food chain while I was still in school..... I now have an accounting degree and I want advice on how to approach a job interview for a banking job? Because clearly the level of seriousness/professionalism is on a much higher level.... So, any thoughts?

Real job interviews tend to be more serious. Be ready to answer any questions they ask, but also have some questions of your own. Asking questions shows interest in the company. I would also advise that you go in neatly groomed and well dressed ( ie wear a tie and tuck in your shirt!)

Most of the overlapping interview questions I've been asked were:

1 - Tell me about yourself
2 - What are your past experiences/projects?
3 - Do you have any experiences with ___ or ___ ?
4 - What do you know about the company?

Those 4 were most common and the obvious last one, - Do you have any questions? which you should find something to ask about to make it seem like you're interested lol. They'll ask other questions too, but most of the time it usually goes by the flow depending on how your conversation is going. I've been asked random questions before too, like what are my hobbies and have I been to so and so country/city before lol

Spend some time learning about the company online. Asking questions about the company you've applied to (stuff that's not normally easily googled) shows that you have interest in working for them, which they'll like. Don't just ask basic questions. Get into their quarterly reports and see what the financial health of the company is. Things like that. You need to begin to know your potential employer before they begin to know you.

Be sure to wear a shirt and tie and clean shoes. I had one place that specified clean shoes, and they had to be shiny too. Guess they had too many applicants that worn beat up tennis shoes or something. Either way. Be sure your hair is cut, no facial hair, no visible tattoos, and wear a suit. Corporate America is a completely different world that exists in ours.

Good luck!

A big one ive seen lately is “heres a relevant problem that could arise, how would you handle it?” Which often asks for what specific steps could you take to mitigate customer dissatisfaction without causing undue risk to the company. As for asking questions a couple that show engagement would be “how has the scope of this position changed from the previous employee and what relevant skills could further benefit this shift?” Also “are there any soecific challenges the previous employee faced or changes the company would like to see from this position?”

Be wary that the clothing you wear will depend on the workplace. If it's some place like a bank where everyone dresses as formally as possible, you better go in there dressed neat and clean. If it's a more relaxed place like where they develop games, wear what you'd wear to work if you got the job. It shows confidence and sympathy. You'll be more honest that way.

Don't forget that the interview is going both ways. Make sure you ask questions that let you know the culture of the company and how management supports their employees. Obviously not everyone can afford to turn down a job offer, but if you've got options you should keep it in mind
