Never watched any one piece but the Netflix movie just came out and I'm wondering if it's a good place to start. Do I need to watch the anime before to appreciate it? And how far into the anime does it cover?

I think so. Spoils a few reveals that you would get later on but I don't think they are incredibly important overall. Castings are all great. Would recommend the manga over everything but it's a fun watch

I watched the live action without have seen the anime and I appreciate it. Obviously if you have watched the anime you can spot some reference, but it's still enjoyable without.
