I was just talking to my coworker who recently been to japan. Appearantly people in japan still go to dvd store for porn. The adult section are usually located in the basement. People would wear a hat and face mask before going in. It is more of it being a shame than embarrassment and no one really talks about sex and porn in real life or mainstream media. For me I just don't understand that. What do you guys think.

It's the same way in the west, there are still sex stores that sell physical copies of stuff, and a lot of avoiding eye contact with the other customers. Everywhere has some form of stigma against selling/buying/owned anything sex related, Japan is no different if not even more sexually repressed than the West.

In my opinion is a matter of time. Western culture evolved quickly in terms of opening sexuality, women revelation, liberalism, etc. What we see in Japan about sexuality was seen in the past century in the west, but with the time what we see in west is going to be seen in the east. Now, this may take time. But apart from the quick globalization of countries and cultures, social media is helping to make the changes more rapidly. In politics for example is happening. We might expect in culture and sexuality to be open thanks to our evolving connections.

I think European and  South America countries more proud in there sexuality than any one in the world, Arab countries are the worse believe me

I thought that this difference began way back, a couple centuries ago, when westerns went into Japan and thought they were really progressive! So Japan decided to "hide themselves" to avoid making westerns go away. And that personal restriction grew to the culture we see today...

Interesting discussion. I think there is an inherent tabboo when it comes to sex in general, some more than others. I would argue that while Japan has its weird censorship, the Japanese has more riskier and a bit "liberal" when it comes to gravure, particularly underage gravure... like below 15 year olds in swimsuits. In the US, the performers or models must be above 18 to legally work and do adult/sexy modelling. But in Japan? Wew! Everytime I scan over JAV listing, I have some uncomfortable feeling when it comes to this matter.
