So I noticed on the FAQ that purchasing a link decreases your contributor level. My question is why do that when the points are in a way also because of your actions done on the site? Also if you're new (like me) wouldn't you be dug into a deeper hole just because you purchased a link?

The Points and contributor system are strategic tools to limit "leeching". If you have to worry about them, chances are you are not a good contributor to begin with and the system is, in effect, working.

If you are a contributing member to the site, you will quickly realise how little you actually have to worry about them both.
