TV shows/movies based on videogames - do you think they're good or a terrible idea?

With the current WITCHER tv show and the upcoming BORDERLANDS show, does anyone think this is a good idea?

I think generally they're a bad idea because games are not stories, they're non-linear gameplay with a lot of repetition, that is loosely structured with story beats throughout.

MORTAL KOMBAT was not great, neither was LARA CROFT. For THE WITCHER I find it to be really not a great show and the character, which worked ok in the game, is far too annoying in the show.

I can't even imagine how they'll attempt to make BORDERLANDS.

I can't see any videogames being turned into movies at all, with the current vermin running Hollywood. Everything will get turned into a woke love story, sharing only the name with the videogame.

I think right now the tone of movies and shows is too serious to match the fun of a videogame.

Possibly the only game series that could be a decent movie is the Uncharted series, but that would still just be an Indiana Jones rip off. Again, games are a completely different medium than movies and TV.

Indeed they are. They have much more room and time for presenting stories, and their stories generally are much better than that of the average movie. Plus their production time is counted in years, not months. Most movies are two hours long, and you can only do so much in those two hours, especially if the film's creators are required to use the standard Hollywood formula, rather than creating a compelling story. And most movie scripts are written in about six or so months. Two different mediums done two different ways, and mostly not compatible.

I think it all boils down to the Directors, Writters and producers ability to translate video games which completely different medium to films, into movies.

same logic applies to anime/manga/comics series. Because there are times where the writters decides that "I want to to this" where in the thing they want to do isn't inherently present in the source material

Basically what I mean , is that it all comes down to how can they be true to the sources material and how will they be able to translate those stuff into movie format
