I think he has enough motivation to become Iron Man's successor. But what is expected is a certain black woman who pops out of nowhere.

Was he abandoned without being used as the main character?

I heard somewhere that the actor is signed up to be in three movies and so far we've only seen him in Iron Man 3 and at Tony's funeral. I think they're definitely gonna do something more with him.

I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up in the new armor wars tv show. From the comics armor wars was when a bunch of iron man suit designs got stolen. Tony and and Rhodes had to travel the world and fight the knock off iron men. So I could easily see a team of war machine, iron heart (right Williams who is being introduced in the next black panther) and the kid from IM3 teaming up to protect Tony's legacy.
