Thoughts on Criterion?
#1
What does everyone think of Criterion/Criterion Collection/Criterion Channel? I recently subscribed to Criterion Channel and I must say, I am very impressed with the website and general interface of the service. The selection of films and many genres they provide is a breath of fresh air compared to mainstream services like Netflix or Hulu, majority of things on there I have either not seen or never even heard of, I'm also a fan of their short film selection for when I'm not feeling like dedicating 2 hours to one story.

Overpriced for what they are. They just take older films and then re-release them, making them into classics, when some of them are, and some of them aren't. If they provided something special with them, then maybe it would be worth it, but I don't think it is.

It's probably the cheapest alternative to going to a film studies course. The selection alone makes it worth it. Want to rent 30 classic films over the span of a year, individually? That's gonna be more expensive. Like any streaming service, it's about how often you use it. The curation aspect of it and how they present it to the user is great too.

I agree with both sides. While it is a bit overpriced, it’s not really something you can get anywhere else so it has that going for it.

Agree with the others. Overpriced, but when it's movie you are already a huge fan of, definitely worth picking up the criterion version. The artwork is always on point.

I still think it's not just overpriced, but overrated. Current example: they have the movie Police Story from 1985, an early Jackie Chan film, and one of the best martial arts films of all time. Cost of their edition of it? $25. Cost of the Collector's Edition that immediately preceeded the Criterion version? $6. The only difference is that Criterion put a pretty piece of artwork on their box, whereas the CE version used a still from the film.

No it isn't. A Community College film studies course is cheaper and goes over more than Criterion does.

It's nice, but it's not worth the price they ask for it.
