Thoughts on Spacex Starlink?
#1
Personally, as someone who lives in the woods where a traditional cable internet provider won't touch with a 100-foot pole, I'm thrilled at the idea of being able to have access to a new kind of satellite internet that doesn't suffer from the terrible ping rates of the current satellite internet providers. Playing games with 600+ ping isn't the greatest experience in the world.

But I'm not sure how popular this new project is gonna be with people who already have pretty good cable/fiber Internet, and I think in order for Starlink to be a success, it's gonna have to bring in at least a moderate percentage of current cable users

that's the trouble - it's solving a problem that only exists for a tiny minority of people

A tiny minority in the US maybe, but I think it has the best potential in more underdeveloped countries around the globe who lack the infrastructure that the US and western European countries have.

Also, cable providers in the US such as Comcast are generally hated by the public whereas spaceX is a project of Elon Musk who is generally more liked by the public, so I think there's a considerable number of people who would jump ship based on that alone if starlink can offer some competitive prices.

Regardless, it's an interesting prospect and I'm thrilled at the idea of finally being able to sniff some sub-100 ping rates in a game for once

In this day and age I see internet as such a important tool its almost a necessity. I think it just may be the first step in setting some standards for internet ping.

that ish is crazy to see in person..... it was like 12 of them in a row.....and they want to have thousands more? What happens when they collide?

#6
The thing with starlink is, that it only looks like a dotted row for a short period of time after the launch. After a while the sattelites will spread out and be much much further apart. Also they are only brightly visible for a couple of hours after sunset and before sunrise because in the middle of the night no sunlight can reflect off their solar panels

Insane! Being someone whos constantly on the road this is gonna be a game changer for me
