Ways to make starting reading/watching One Piece less daunting
#1
People's biggest complain about this anime is that it is too long. Dragon Ball didn't feel long because it was mostly fight with just enough content to call it a story. One Piece does have fights, but the longest mano-a-mano ones take about five episodes, with the odd ten or so ones for a single fight in an arc that was DRAGGED. The rest is worldbuilding, character development, story and lore, and tears. Lots of tears. This thing will make anyone cry. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

That said, why didn't you watch it yet in this quarentine? It's the perfect time-killer. But do NOT binge it if you're not already interested past the slower 30-40 or so initial episodes.

Now, for the tips. You can go to youtube, watch a guy called "Totally Not Mark" that has already binged One Piece for you on the manga side of things, made videos of about 30 to 40 minutes long that cover full arcs of the story, if not a two-parter for the longer ones. This can give you enough basic info on what to expect and enough backstory to be up to date, and you can decide to get the anime or manga from current episodes to catch on. Not ideal, but his videos are really good and he does addresses corrections in the next video whenever something comes up.

The second option is watching the recap movies. They cover some arcs where the crew is still assembling or something important happens. This will speed up things considerably as it's a full arc in an hour and half to two hours video. You can either pick up after they stop, and/or watch the inbetween episodes they don't cover.

From what I can remember, these should cover quite a bit of content:
One Piece: Episode of East Blue: Luffy and His Four Friends' Great Adventure
Episode of Nami
*(anime from ep 45-53 and 62-77, arcs Loguetown, Buggy's Crew Adventure Chronicles, SKIP filler eps 54-61, reverse mountain, whisky peak, Diary of Koby-Meppo, Little garden)
Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura
The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta
*(anime from ep 144-152, Jaya)
Episode of Skypiea
*(anime from ep 207-219, arc Long Ring Long Land)
Episode of Merry (prepare to cry edition)

This only covers parts before the timeskip, and up to the point where most - not all - crewmembers have joined. After this, you caught up to about a third of the anime and can now watch from episode 313 onward if you think this is for you.
*(Skip episodes 291-292, 303, 406-407, they might be mostly reminiscing)

Now, if you REALLY want to binge it all, someone has put up a nice list over at reddit ( r/OnePiece/comments/cs7di9/one_piece_chronological_watching_order_with/ ) and you can check for filler content to avoid at
