the thing (1982). nothing will ever beat how fkn scared i was when i first saw that movie when i was like 11. great stuff.

The first horror movie that actually scared me as a kid was Candyman. Still holds up I think.
As an adult, I find that the more obscure stuff is more entertaining to watch. There's a movie from the 80's called Maniac that is pretty disturbing. I believe there was also a remake somewhat recently, which I haven't seen, but I imagine the original is better judging from trailers.
