What's Your Favorite Movie or Director?
#1
Who's your favorite director or auteur or if you can't name one, what's your favorite movie? A lot of directors are very unique stylistically and easily recognizable. I'm interested if people enjoy movies before knowing who directed it or if you'd definitely choose to see a movie as long as it's your favorite director.

I made a list of some notable directors but feel free to add some more:

  • Christopher Nolan
  • Paul Thomas Anderson
  • Peter Jackson
  • Wes Anderson
  • David Fincher
  • Ridley Scott
  • Coen Brothers
  • Quentin Tarantino
  • Kevin Smith
  • Terry Gilliam
  • James Cameron
  • Martin Scorsese
  • Steven Spielberg
  • David Lynch

Probably Nolan for me, really like his ideas, may not all be executed perfectly but the intent is amazing. Just as long as its definitely not Michael Bay lol

Funnily, I totally forgot about Michael Bay, even though not great still important for the era. Memento would be my pick for Nolan.

I'd second Wes Anderson as one of the best of the more recent generation. Scorsese and Spielberg are greats I like but they're on their way out as artists, with others like Wes Anderson or even generations after him coming up as replacements.

Scorsese benefited from a wonderful editor, but The Irishman (2019) seemed sloppy and disjointed compared to Casino (1995). I agree with your sentiment on Wes Anderson and would put the Coen Brothers up there too.

the John Wick series !

John Wick was pretty fun, looks like the director Chad Stahelski started out doing stunts and also did secondary directing for Captain America: Civil War (2016).

i think clint eastwood has proved himself to be one of the elite directors out there

I just realized he directed Unforgiven (1992).

Tarantino for sure
