Over time I've come to realize that programming is really enjoyable to me.

With so many tech fields like data science, software engineering, security, web dev, etc. which career is the best to get into?

Field is endless tbh. Create a reliable/unique app = goldmine. Most Forbes young entrepreneurs are app developers

At the end of the day, it depends on what you define as 'best'

I personally find security way more interesting than the others, it's a field that is constantly evolving

Nonetheless, web dev, data science and software engineering are more like the "safe path" because you'll always find a job on those fields

Just to give you an idea. Programming, at some point, will be "good to haves" once you start moving up the management chain (if that's what you want).

Developing is a good base as it's easy to pivot from there once you're more exposed to the field, and entry level jobs are readily available. Be careful of traps like SecOps where you're handling password resets and monitoring logs, or things like IT support. These are decent enough jobs on their own but hard to move into something else better paying or more interesting. Development is good because it's quite easily retooled to the latest tech trend -tech moves fast and to make a career out of it you have to stay up to date. A lot of infrastructure jobs like database administrators have been put out of work in recent years due to the shift to the cloud and the difficulty of staying relevant.

If you can program and have a tech degree you can start a career in pretty much any field. Just about every company out there is looking for more efficient ways to manage data and create better software for their employees to use. Find a smaller company that is behind the times start developing software for them. You'll be shocked by what simple tools can make a huge difference. A lot of times at smaller companies people aren't even aware of how much adding a software developer to a team can help. It may be simple things and seem rather monotonous at times. But its a great way to get your foot in door somewhere and make a huge difference.
