Quite likely they'll revisit the standard European era's, unfortunately, for most of history warfare has been at a local level (raiding/tribal), or for small territorial gains.

Larger asymmetric warfare (big nation absorbs smaller nation) is hard to come by as often there is regional stability and a balance of power, meaning it's always difficult to find a time period with multiple parties in major conflict.
