I think pixar hit it with inside out. You think based on how you feel. You don't need words in your head to feel happy. You just feel happy. You don't need words in your head to feel sad. You just feel sad.

Babies don't comprehend anything outside of the most basic feelings, so the fact that they don't know words doesn't hold them back at all. They know when something makes them feel happy and they know when something makes them feel sad. That's all they need in the beginning.
