i guess inviting people to this site with a certain link will increase users in this site. wouldn't you want to build a bigger community in this site?
plus giving away little credits/ levels may increase the incentives for users to send links and invite others

We used to do both of those. People started abusing it by creating tons of fake accounts.

Not to dick-ride but that actually sucks, I was wondering the same thing myself but I guess we just can't have nice things when people learn "hey I can abuse this for my own glory" and then spread the word, next thing you know, everything is different and so much more strict. People can't just acknowledge "hm that's odd this is a thing i can do, but i prob shouldnt" and just move on

Seems like this would just give the site a bad rep anyway, and get links to it banned from big (often spammed sites) like reddit. Which of course is no good.
