You can't expect reporters to actually be able to spell. They can barely survive a day suffering on social media without 12 cups of Starbucks, so you can't realistically expect them to spell, correctly or phonetically.
In both Russian and Ukrainian, Kiev is literally Kee-yev. So this Kyiv bullshit is just that.
