Soccer and cricket are arguably the 2 most popular sports in the world in terms of viewership. Soccer in Europe and cricket in India/Australia.

I understand that it's part of the culture in their respective regions but both are so boring to watch imo.

I think it's mainly due to fact people from these places play football and cricket, when they are in school or growing up. Naturally, when you are involved in something you gain an interest in watching it too.
