Thoughts on electoral college
#1
Do you all think the US electoral college is beneficial, and that states should be the level at which votes are counted? Or should it be done at the population level (direct democracy)?

Maybe it had a purpose 200 years ago, I don't think it serves any benefit anymore. Ends up just turning into a real tyranny of the majority kind of situation, where the minority votes in (almost) each state (no matter how close that minority is) is just thrown out. Kansas, for example. 6 electoral votes all went to one candidate. But the actual people in the state? Nearly half of them voted for a different candidate. Their votes were just ignored.

it actually becomes a tyranny of the minority - which is worse than a tyranny of the majority. the electoral college gives people in some states several times more power than people in other states. and the power division happens to be related to a lot of things like race (white ppl have a lot more power). the things the majority want overall don't necessarily happen. all in all there's no benefit to the electoral college. i think it's technically possible for a candidate to win like 22% of the popular vote and still win. broke-ass system doesn't make sense

the american system was never meant to represent everyone, and throughout history its pretty well known that a qualified representation is better than a total democracy. A system with qualified representatives will lack support of some, but the wide majority will always be prone to victimizing themselves on whims. Nobody people is born to represent themselves in every matter. There's a reason you hire a lawyer to protect you in the court and a doctor to diagnose you when you are ill.
