Maybe it had a purpose 200 years ago, I don't think it serves any benefit anymore. Ends up just turning into a real tyranny of the majority kind of situation, where the minority votes in (almost) each state (no matter how close that minority is) is just thrown out. Kansas, for example. 6 electoral votes all went to one candidate. But the actual people in the state? Nearly half of them voted for a different candidate. Their votes were just ignored.
