I guess you'd have to define your genres

Most of the breakout games have some genius twist that makes them push their envelope.

I agree FPS all follow in the same pattern, that's partly because we haven't figured out other useful POV action

I liked MYTH, with its environmental effects, but it didn't spawn many imitators.

Witcher's only bad choices was interesting, but does it redefine a genre?
Let's construct a framework or a Venn diagram.

Doom and Unreal Tournament. Maybe Goldeneye too for multiplayer.

#4
DOOM is absolutely the most genre defining game besides maybe Mario. Outside of that I would say WoW did a number on the MMO genre.

#5
Diablo 2 for me defined rpgs and my childhood

#6
Definitley Witcher 3. Massive handcrafted game.

#7
Breath of the Wild. Easily one of the most defining open world games ever made.

#8
Death Stranding

#9
Got no choice but to say Witcher 3. Game truly defined what it means to be a gamer. I've never felt more immersed into a world, the characters, or a plot.

The witcher and Doom

Everyone here talking about RPGs, but one of the games that truly were a new genre was definitely Rocket League.

Quake for classic FPS
Dota for ARTS
Starcraft for RTS
CoD for modern FPS
Civ for 4X
